SW Ring Road Transmission Projects Info Session
Post date: Jan 5, 2016 9:03:07 AM
The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) held an information session on January 6, 2016 at the Lakeview Community Association (LCA). At the information session, we were advised of the process that AUC, a quasi judicial body, follows after an applicant submits an application.
This information session related to Altalink's application to relocate transmission lines in and around the intersections of Glenmore Trail and Sarcee Trail, and Glenmore Trail and 37th Street SW to accommodate Alberta Transportation's southwest Calgary ring road.
The key learning at the information session is that while the LCA could register and express our views on this project (for or against), our view would not carry significant weight as we would not have any "standing". To have standing in a city you have to be a property owner adjacent to this project, i.e. you have to be a resident on 37th Street SW.
Residents on 37th Street SW can learn more about the process by visiting www.auc.ab.ca or by calling (403) 592-4500 or emailing email@example.com
The deadline for filing submissions for or against this application is January 15, 2016.
If a resident is to participate in the hearing, they must file in advance of the hearing. Impacted residents are also welcome to band together if they have similar concerns. Under AUC rule 009 if someone has standing (residents on 37th Street SW), they can recover legal costs if they choose to hire a lawyer. Note that the cost recovery is limited.
Regarding this application, four residents on 37th Street SW have registered as interveners. Consequently, it's likely there will be a public hearing. If there is a hearing, this project that was to break ground on August 27, 2016 will likely be delayed.
At a public hearing, the AUC can either approve, approve with conditions or deny the application.
