Notes from Love (of Wine) is in the Air

Our Valentine’s Day themed evening on Wed, Feb 8 attracted the most registrants for a wine tasting night to date! We’re excited that more people are checking us out every month and that our demographic is expanding as well. It’s certainly made our decision to purchase a wireless mic last fall rather prudent.

Unfortunately for February’s guest speaker, Craig Faas, we didn’t sort out the volume control until the end of the evening.

Fortunately for all in attendance, Craig was a good sport as he endeavored to be heard above the social din of the 60+ present.

Both knowledgeable and entertaining, Craig with PURE Global Imports, led us through our six wines of the evening - four from the aptly named Bliss Family Vineyards (Mendocino County, California.) All from ‘09, a Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay were followed by an extremely well-priced Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our next wine - a smooth 2007 Zinfandel Port from the EOS Estate Winery (also in Mendicino Country) took home the evening’s top honours.

The last wine of the night remained a mystery while everyone tried to guess the grape varietal(s) and country of origin. Mystery Wine #6 turned out to be a Cab Sauvignon/Cab Franc/Merlot blend from the Okanagan’s Ex Nihilo Vineyards.

As a special Valentine’s treat, we enjoyed an assortment of delicious cheese biscuits baked by Gill Kennard served alongside a chocolate fountain with fruit and cakes for dipping. Thanks to our group for being so patient while I burned chocolate in the kitchen and had to call for help in the form of fountain owner Steve Kennard.

As always, kudos to our creative and committed group of organizers: Julie Clifford, Lisa Clifford (currently on sabbatical from us), Shirley Cox, Bonnie Dean, Gill Kennard, Maurice Kheong and Marian Quinn. It’s been a pleasure having your energy and input as we’ve planned and carried out these monthly events!

Thank you to Ken Seaman for tallying our scores and to Ed Bollinger for your help at the check-in table. And to all those who cheerfully lend a hand when they arrive and stay later to help us clean up – thank you! These events are run on volunteer power and the saying ‘many hand make lighter work’ definitely holds true!

See you at next month’s Larch for March tasting featuring wines from the Okanagan Valley!
