Illegal dumping at Weaselhead parking lot

The City of Calgary has received complaints from residents of Lakeview about yard waste dumped at the Weaselhead parking lot located off 37 Street SW. This site is used in the fall for the annual Leaf & Pumpkin Composting Program but it is not in use at this time of year. The City program only operates from late September to early November. Illegal dumping signs are posted at the site.

Yard waste can be disposed of through residential garbage collection as long as the materials are safely packaged. Garbage bags should not weigh more than 20 kg (44 lbs) each. As a rule of thumb – if you can lift the bag with one hand it should be okay. Tie larger clippings like branches in bundles no more than 1.25 metres long. Yard waste can also be disposed of at one of the three City landfills – Spyhill, Shepard and East Calgary. Information on locations, rates and directions to the landfills, is available at www.calgary.ca/waste.

The City also subsidizes the sale of backyard composters for residents. Composting is the recycling of organic materials. It's a natural biological process that breaks down organic matter (food and yard wastes) into a humus-like soil booster called compost. Compost is rich in nutrients that are ideal for soil and plants. By composting, you help keep these organic materials out of the landfill where they produce greenhouse gases.

Calgarians can purchase a composter at the City-subsidized price of $25 (including GST) at the Clean Calgary Association's EcoStore (809 Fourth Ave. S.W.). Contact Clean Calgary at 403-230-1443 or visit www.cleancalgary.org for store hours and availability of stock. The composters are also available through the Calgary Online Store at www.calgaryonlinestore.com (delivery charges apply).
